Climate Change Action Kits

Organising Community Change Workshop Goes to Brisbane

The Obama campaign was one of the most successful on-the-ground campaigns in history. Millions of volunteers took the campaign to their neighbours and friends. Their secret? 'Camp Obama'.

At 'Camp Obama' volunteers around the United States learnt how to integrate powerful stories with strategy and skills. Meeting each other at a million points of hope and energy, these combined to build a powerful popular movement. Now the Union Climate Connectors team is partnering with Getup!, local Australian Conservation Foundation members and local environment groups to bring this powerful training to Brisbane.

We've already seen in the lead-up to the federal election that we're back to politics as usual: sound bites, spin doctors and media pundits ignoring real people and their stories. This is the opportunity to learn the secret weapon of the Obama campaign so we can work together in Brisbane to make sure climate change is on the agenda in this election.

Yes, I'm interested in attending the Community Organising Workshop and would like to read more.

Food Action Kit

Pull any string in the climate crisis knot and you’ll find it hitched up to all the others.
Food is no exception.

Modern agriculture is a major carbon polluter because it uses tonnes of fuel and fertilisers. Methane, mainly from belching cows, and nitrous oxide from nitrate fertilisers, are also potent greenhouse gases. Food production causes deforestation, as more and more land grows pasture and feed crops for livestock, and palm oil for processed foods. Deforestation makes Indonesia and Brazil the planet’s third and fourth worst polluters.

But the good news is that the solutions can be delicious, nutritious and ingenious.

Water Action Kit

Our first kit for 2010 - Water!

Our challenge: In south-eastern Australia, home to most of our people and agriculture, rainfall is declining. Our CSIRO and Bureau of Meteorology tell us this is primarily due to human-caused climate change.

The good news: It’s possible to get the goods and services we need—crops, clean clothes, sanitation—with less water. Smart, innovative households, farmers and urban water managers are taking action to secure our water future. We’ve picked best ideas so you can too.

Check out some ideas for how you can protect your water, and a great activity for the kids in the Climate Connectors Water kit!

Jobs Action Kit

It takes 49 tradies and apprentices to build 1000 solar panels — and we need millions!

Wind turbines have over 10,000 parts. Who’s going to make and install them?

The good news? It’s not “jobs or the environment.” Cutting pollution creates jobs.

This month's Union Climate Connectors Action Kit is about jobs. It coincides with a recently released report from the Australian Conservation Foundation and the ACTU called Creating Jobs - Cutting Pollution: the roadmap for a cleaner, stronger economy.

Organising Community Change Workshop Goes to Perth

What is it?

Movements are built by engaging many people in meaningful targeted action, yet the development of skills in how to engage people is often difficult to find. This workshop helps to build core leadership practices, weaving them into Public Narrative Training - the story of self, story of us and story of now - that was the heart of Obama’s on-the-ground campaign and resulted in one of the most successful political campaigns in history.

Media Action Kit

How to get your story in the local paper.

Although it can sometimes be hard to get coverage in major metropolitan papers, it is surprisingly easy to succeed with local and regional press. They need fresh content every week, and you are the news - as long as you have a local angle. We are focusing on newspapers here, but the same process applies for industry or trade publications and local radio or TV stations.
